Our honey originates from the native New Zealand bush Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as the Manuka tree. These special shrubs grow in coastal forests in remote, pristine wilderness areas. In the spring, our bee colonies are strategically placed in these isolated locations just as the Manuka flowers bloom. The bees forage the nectar and deposit it into honeycombs, where it is later harvested.

Manuka honey has a delicious sweet taste and a smooth texture. It is thicker, darker and creamier than table honey. It can be eaten straight from a teaspoon, mixed into drinks (tea, lemonade, smoothies), or put on food (toast, yogurt, granola, pastries). It can also be used topically as a face mask or to treat wounds and skin conditions.

What is Special About Manuka Honey?

When a single plant species is predominantly utilized to produce honey, the product is known as mono-floral honey. The chemical characteristics of mono-floral honey are closely linked to the species of flowering plant. Our Manuka honey is mono-floral honey and therefore its characteristics are derived from Manuka flowers.

Manuka honey differs from other types of honey because of its unique bioactive properties.

While all types of raw honey have antibacterial effects due to hydrogen peroxide activity, only Manuka honey contains both hydrogen peroxide activity and non-peroxide activity. This makes Manuka honey’s antibacterial effects much more potent and gives Manuka honey its superfood status.

Antler Farms® Manuka Honey contains over 2,000 individual natural compounds including methylglyoxal (MGO), the major component of its powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial activity. The process starts with Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a compound that is found in high concentrations only in the Manuka flower’s nectar. DHA does not have antibacterial properties. But over time DHA converts to Methylglyoxal (MGO) through a natural chemical reaction in the hive. MGO is what gives Manuka honey its powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.

In addition, Manuka honey has a distinct nutritional profile. It also contains carbohydrates, enzymes, amino acids, B vitamins, trace minerals, electrolytes, fatty acids, alkaloids, glycosides, phenolic and flavonoid compounds.

What are the Benefits of Manuka Honey?

How is Antler FarmsŪ Manuka Honey Processed?

Antler FarmsŪ Manuka Honey is harvested from sustainable bee hives found in remote, coastal forests of New Zealand, free from environmental pollution.

The skill, planning and resources needed to harvest Manuka honey is extraordinary, which makes it much more difficult and costly to produce than other types of honey.

Antler Farms® Manuka Honey is made by our sustainable bee colonies in clean, untouched wilderness areas of the North and South islands. Some locations are accessible only by helicopter. The window for collecting Manuka honey is very short. The Manuka flowers are in bloom for just two to six weeks per year, which can be easily disrupted by seasonal weather changes.

During harvest, the bee hives are transported to a processing facility in Canterbury Plains, where the honey is carefully extracted from the honeycombs. This procedure starts by slightly warming the honeycomb trays to get the liquid flowing, removing the wax seal on the honeycomb, then spinning the tray to remove the contents. The honey is bottled on location immediately after processing.

Each batch of Manuka honey is tested by an independent accredited laboratory to certify the quality and grade of the honey.



What are Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) Ratings?

Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) ratings indicate the level of certain key chemical markers in Manuka honey. The higher the UMF number, the higher the level of these compounds, and the rarer and more expensive the Manuka honey (see below - How is Manuka Honey Evaluated?).

Essentially, the UMF is a quality trademark. The higher the concentration of UMF, the stronger the effect

HOW IS MANUKA HONEY EVALUATED (UMF RATINGS)?

The Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) is an independent organization that performs certain tests on Manuka honey to determine its quality. The association ensures the authenticity, identity, potency and quality of Manuka honey.

The chemical markers used to produce a UMF rating are:

  • Methylglyoxal (MGO) - the antibacterial component of Manuka honey.
  • Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) – the chemical precursor to MGO.
  • Leptosperin – a natural chemical found only in the nectar of the Manuka flower.

Note that there are other Manuka rating systems such as KFactor, Bio Active and MGO. However, these are not as complete or advanced as the UMF rating because they do not measure the all the signature chemical markers. UMF, the system Antler Farms® utilizes, is widely considered to be the gold standard for Manuka honey certification.

It is estimated that as much as 80% of Manuka honey sold on the market is fake.

Some competitors sell honey labeled as Manuka that contains no Manuka honey at all. Others dilute Manuka honey with other types of honey to lower their costs. And still others add synthetic chemicals to “improve” the profile of their products.

We subject our products to third party evaluation so our customers can be confident that what they buy is 100% real, genuine New Zealand Manuka honey with guaranteed minimum methylglyoxal (MGO) content.
